VVS Laxman's Love Affair With Eden Gardens

It was a pure pleasure to watch when he flicked Darren Sammy between mid-on and mid-wicket to score one more ton at the Eden Gardens. That made him one of the five batsmen to have best average at a venue with 1000 plus runs. He is none other than VVS Laxman who continues his love affair with the venue Eden Gardens.

I still remember in my school days it was M. Azharuddin who enjoyed similar golden run at the Eden Gardens. Similarly another wristy batsman enjoys batting at this venue whom we all christen as Very Very Special Laxman. Playing in the 2nd Test of the series against West Indies he scored his 5th century here and overall 17th century. Although he has been overshadowed by the contemporary batsmen like Sachin or Dravid, but he still remains one of the most reliable match winner and match saver for India.

People who saw him playing the spellbound 281 runs innings against Australia in 2001 still consider it as the best ever innings played in test cricket. Apart from that he scored 154 against West Indies in 2002, 112 against Pakistan in 2007, 143 against South Africa in 2010 and the latest one was 176 not out.

Does Laxman really need to think of the batting basics at the Eden Gardens? I reckon he just steps into the ground with a bat and remembers his golden innings of 281 against Australia. He now joins the likes of Don Bradman (average of 128.53 at MCG) and Greg Chappell (average of 111.77 at the Gabba) who have an average of more than 100 at a single venue where they have batted atleast ten times. Laxman averages 110.63 here at the Eden Gardens.

A player who win all hearts through his 167 runs at Sydney against Australia has never seen back after that. He has played heroic innings, saved as well as won many prestigious test matches for India.

A brief review of his overall career in test cricket:-

128 Test Matches
214 Innings
33 Not outs
8387 Runs
281 Highest Score
46.33 Average
16 Centuries
55 Half Centuries
